Robber Arrested after Leaving Pay StubMarch 2, 2006 (KCOY TV)
SANTA BARBARA -- A suspected bank robber in Santa Barbara is in custody today after detectives say he made off with cold hard cash Thursday, leaving behind a suspected bomb.
Buildings in the area were evacuated, streets were closed off, and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department bomb squad was called in.
Bank employees and dozens of other people working or visiting nearby offices were told to evacuate to a safe distance, because of the suspicious package left in the bank.
The Sheriff's Department bomb squad deployed its robot, which picked up the suspicious device and removed it to a remote location where it was intentionally blown up.
No one inside or outside the bank was hurt. The bomb squad says the device was made to look like a bomb, but in fact did not contain any explosive material.
Santa Barbara Police are not revealing any information at this time regarding the bank robber or robbers, including suspect descriptions and how they got away.
Detectives say he inadvertently left his pay stub attached to the back side of the demand note. Detectives assisted by an FBI agent soon tracked down the suspect, identified as Fred Bendtzen, age 48.
He was arrested without incident at his residence in a sober living home in the 200 block of W. Haley St. Detectives believe that following the robbery Bendtzen fled in his car. He went to a Laundromat in a futile effort to wash the dye out. He even tried to re-stain the money green with food coloring purchased at a grocery store. These attempts failed and he discarded the money in a dumpster. In frustration he returned home shortly before being arrested.
